Is there a portable version of ET? Does it use the registry, or is it wholly contained within the program folder? Can it be run off a portable drive or carried between machines while keeping your profile, maps, autoexec, etc?

You can use it as a portable version, just copy and paste Wolfenstein ET folder into your usb, but you need a lot of free space for maps and sound packs, i did it before and it works. Maybe i missed something.

and what about punkbuster services?

I don't think et uses the registry that much, but pb services must be installed if you want to play in servers with pb... with slac it would be possible, but I don't know if they detect playing from different machines as something bad, if they detect multi-accounting there must be a sort of hardware signature or something... no idea.

A cool alternative would be a Linux livecd with 3d graphics support for different machines and all, plus punkbuster and ET. There used to be a linux live dvd full of 3d games, unluckily no ET.

The problem would be updating stuff (new maps, pb updates, etc.) and changing your cfg. So you would need a way to save changes to an usb memory stick, like mounting it as a top layer over the other filesystem. Not impossible, but I have never tried to do such complex things.

I used to have a ET live cd courtesy of http://news.softpedia.com/news/Wolfenstein-Enemy-Territory-LiveCD-41756.shtml and I did used to run it off usb, as a matter of fact I haven't reinstall ET in 3 or 4 years, just c/p to new computers without issues, never had to update pb manually. PB services get installed on host computers when you launch et, you might run into a problem on a locked down user accounts in Windows but there are ways around that.
