Alright, I need the forum philosophers to clock in.

Is talent actually real…

Or is it just thousands of invisible reps we didn’t see?

Because every time someone gets diffed, there’s always that one guy saying:

“He’s just naturally gifted.”

But is he? Or has he just been grinding since dial-up internet?

The “Talent Is Real” Argument

Some research suggests genetics do play a role.

Reaction time has a heritable component.

Muscle fiber composition (fast-twitch vs slow-twitch) is partly genetic.

Height matters in sports like basketball (sorry short kings).

Studies on elite performers show certain cognitive processing speeds are above average.

There’s also the concept of the 10,000-hour rule from Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (based on research by Anders Ericsson). The idea? High-level skill requires massive deliberate practice.

But here’s the catch: Ericsson himself argued it wasn’t just hours — it was quality reps.

So even the “talent” conversation usually circles back to practice.

 The “It’s Just Reps” Argument

Look at almost any elite competitor:

Pro athletes?

Top chess players?

High-level esports grinders?

They didn’t wake up cracked. They accumulated structured reps over years.

Studies in skill acquisition show that deliberate practice accounts for a huge portion of performance variance — especially in cognitively demanding fields. Talent might open the door, but reps kick it off the hinges.

And let’s be honest…

How many “naturally gifted” players have we seen plateau because they stopped grinding?

Meanwhile the mid guy with work ethic becomes a problem after 6 months.

 Real Question for Us

If talent is real:

Why do consistent grinders pass flashy players long term?

If talent isn’t real:

Why do some people pick things up 3x faster than others?

Is talent:

A head start?

Faster learning speed?

Just early exposure?

Or a myth we tell ourselves to cope?

My Hot Take

Talent exists… but it’s massively overrated.

Natural ability might give you:

A smoother start

Faster early progression

Higher ceiling potential

But reps decide who actually gets there.

Because talent without discipline?

Just potential with good PR.

Alright, your turn:

Are you Team “Born Different”

Or Team “Built Different”?

Drop your stance. Back it up.

And if you say talent isn’t real — I better not see you calling someone gifted next match. 😏
