First you should learn on how to blend the images and text into the BG. What software are you using? I would recommend looking at youtube vids of how to do lightsaber effects and 3D text in Gimp. The reason for this is that they will both teach you a fair amount about special layering effects. Once you learn these you can apply what you learned and let your creativity loose and start creating some of your own impressive effects. Also look at some of the tutorials on making fire effects in GIMP. This will help you learn how simple tools in GIMP can be used in a more creative manner if you have the patience. Sorry for not posting links to certain vids but all vids on this subject no matter how bad the end effect can be useful when mixed with ideas from other tutorials.
