  5. UPDATE: The download links have been updated - 12w30b is now ready for testing! ________________ It's getting really close to 1.3 release time, checking that everything runs as expected is exceptionally important. Mojang's plan is to release one or two snapshots, and then the 1.3 pre-release by Wednesday or Thursday. The pre-release is intended to be identical to the official release next week, in order to give modmakers and server admins a week’s head start. This is why Mojang needs to do a snapshot first, since they can’t do changes to the update after the pre-release is out. This snapshot consists of all the bugfixes that Nathan (@dinnerbone) and Eric (@_grum) have been working on the last two weeks. Get it here: Client: Download Server: Download Also, be sure to check on the wiki for updates as they occur! ________________ Changelog Maybe: Made creepers stronger - Relevant logs from #minecraft on freenode on July 19th Depending on difficulty, they do more damage now: Easy: 16.6% more damage Normal: 33.3% more damage Hard: 50% more damage Improved performance Accelerated chunk loading Decreased lag spike frequency Made the Nether less laggy Made chat work smoothly even when the server is laggy Decreased unnecessary world updates Decreased packets sent between client and server Added VSync Has to be toggled manually in options.txt Added Fullscreen mode Has to be toggled manually in options.txt You can now use decimals when /tp'ing to specific coordinates Fixed some bugs Fixed existing signs not showing text Fixed Mob Spawners all looking like pig spawners Fixed cmd+c, cmd+x & cmd+v not working on OS X Fixed sneaking players' nameplates not staying hidden when loading the chunks the sneaking players are in Fixed multiple chunks often not displaying Fixed trying to spawn an entity that is not a mob via spawner editing crashing the game Fixed higher server-set view distances instantly kicking joining players Fixed sections above Y=191 becoming invisible when loading worlds Fixed not completely generated chunks not updating to visually when walking into them Fixed compasses not pointing to spawn but to X=8 & Z=8 after respawning Fixed other players' fishing lines looking like they start from their feet Maybe: Fixed a bug with Unbreaking-enchanted tools and destroying blocks Fixed being able to move LAN servers in the server list and crashing the game Fixed opening SP worlds to LAN, saving and quitting it leaving the server running and showing up in the server list Fixed pushing a minecart with the movement keys causing the camera to shake in the direction pressed Fixed potion effects losing their graphical effects when traveling between dimensions Fixed ghast's fireballs getting stuck mid-air when unloading their chunk, might apply to fire charges and blaze's fireballs as well Fixed the last slot in the opened creative inventory's hotbar being one pixel too short on all but the survival inventory tabs and a few pixels being off on the survival inventory tab Fixed blocks disappearing when you placing them under yourself and jumping Fixed the client trying to trample crops instead of letting the server dictate tramplingA big thanks to redstonehelper for his help in compiling the list! 6. To many, the name Ric Richardson won't mean much. However, it is likely a name that will garner a great deal more attention in the coming days - his company "Uniloc" is suing Mojang for allegedly infringing on the company's patent. What patent is allegedly being infringed? Quote a system and method ... for preventing unauthorized access to electronic data stored on an electronic device. It is not known at this time what, if anything, this means for Mojang. Of note, Markus "Notch" Persson has certainly voiced his opinion on the matter, stating that he "will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent". Little else is known about the lawsuit at this time. Notch has made the lawsuit PDF available for viewing, which you can see by clicking here. He has also posted a detailed write-up on his perspective on software patents - you can view it by clicking here. Uniloc appears to be suing numerous other gaming producers allegedly violating this patent, including Square Enix, Electronic Arts and others. Any further specifics of the case will be covered as they develop. ________________ This week, David and Toby talk about Minecon 2012, Creeper clothes and other awesome Minecraftiness - check it out! Well, the author himself put it best: The_Forgotten said: Welcome, ladies and non-ladies, to yet another custom map adventure. What you see before your eyes is a picture of the Castle of Madness, ruled by yourself. That's right: You are the Monarch of Madness. King of the unstable, leader to insanity, czar of craze - call it as you like. However, not everything is completely whack here, as there is still an easy to follow story in front of you. Fifty years ago, you went to sleep, but why exactly? You know not. All there is left of your past presence are a few notes written by your butler, who took care of you a long time ago. 10. Child's Play - it's a charity most of us are familiar with. Every year - since 2003 - Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games, has raised millions of dollars to help out children in hospitals, providing them with video games, toys, books and other awesome stuff. One of the most interesting ways that Child's Play gets the community involved is by having sanctioned events, set up by interested parties to raise funds for the charity. One such event - hosted by Qubetubers - is getting into the spirit of things, by hosting a 48-hour Minecraft Marathon! This isn't a series of events spread out over two days, but a full, straight 48 hours of Livestreamed Minecraft! The stream will include a number of special guests, including (but not limited to) Direwolf20, AntVenom, and Mojang's own Marc Watson, Customer Support Guru! This list is by no means exhaustive, and many special guests are expected to attend. Want to get involved? Want more details? 12. A recent exploit was discovered in the Minecraft authorization servers, which allowed players to log in to SMP servers as any account they wished. Mojang has temporarily taken down the login servers while they work to eliminate this exploit. It is not expected to take long. Minecraft Chick had the following to say on the matter: Quote Hi Guys, We are aware of the security issues involved with the Minecraft authorization servers and are currently working to fix it. Right now the authorization servers have been taken offline and will be down until further notice. The Mojangstas are working hard to make sure we get everything back to perfect working order. We’ll keep you updated as we have a more clear timeline. We really are sorry about this and are working as fast as we can! Happy Sunday Please remember: if you are not already logged into Minecraft, you will not be able to do so until the server is brought back online. It is not believed at this time that any account information - such as passwords, security info or any other sensitive information - was compromised. Players are, as in any similar situation, encouraged to change their password when the authorization servers come online, if they feel their information was compromised. Redditor "barneygale" gave a very detailed breakdown of the process, which you can read by clicking here. This post will be updated with any relevant information as it develops. View the full article

  15. Time Bomb - A New Game Mode Did you ever play tag? If so, this interesting take on the game will certainly get your attention; TimeBomb - devised by ExplosiveTNT and GamePlayerHD - is a game mode where players are spawned into an arena, with a certain number of them carrying TNT. The idea is to tag other players with it, so they wind up carrying the TNT instead of you; once the 1-minute timer runs out, whoever's left carrying the TNT blows up, and the survivors get points! Of course, it's not as easy as merely tagging your opponents. The maps are also covered with various wool blocks, each one providing a different effect when walked on: green wool makes you instantly jump very high, blue wool makes you run very fast, and black wool is...bad. Don't touch the black wool. Curious to try this game mode yourself? Check out the author's thread: click here!
