There are dozens of different video formats, and sometimes you'll need to switch between them. That's when you need a video converter, and while desktop software is a great choice if you have a large batch of files to convert, an online tool is more convenient for occasional use.

Choosing the right online video converter isn't easy, though. Some of the most popular sites are packed with ads and popups, while others have file size limits that make them impractical for videos longer than a couple of minutes.

That's why we've created this guide, which will help you choose the best tool for your videos. These online video converters have minimal ads (if any), let you choose from an excellent selection of file formats, and enable you to upload files over 500GB.

1. CloudConvert

A remarkable online file converter that can handle over 200 file types, including any video format you care to name – CloudConvert is the best

CloudConvert is the work of LunaWeb – creator of the excellent ClipConverter YouTube video downloader. It can handle files up to 1GB in size – a generous offering – and can process up to five at once.

It's not limited to video files – CloudConvert can convert almost every format you care to name, including spreadsheets, vector images, audio files and presentations to name just a few.

You can select files from your desktop, a URL, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive or OneDrive, and the conversion options are very impressive. Not only can you choose a file format and quality, you can also cut the clip, add subtitles, and choose the FPS and resolution.

The free version of CloudConvert limits you to 25 'conversion minutes' per day. This is a measure of time spent processing your files, but if it's likely to be a problem you're better off using a desktop video converter instead.

As with ClipChamp (below) you'll need to create an account to use CloudConvert, or sign in using a social media account, but this remarkable file converter is well worth this extra step.

ClipChamp's selection of presets are great if you don't want to spend time setting the size, format and quality yourself, though manual options are available too

2. ClipChamp

A video editor, file converter and webcam recorder for your web browser, and no software to download. ClipChamp truly lives up to its name

The first time you use ClipChamp, you’ll be prompted to sign into your Facebook or Google account, or log in with your email address. Once that's done, you have access to an amazingly powerful online video converter, editor and webcam recorder – all right in your browser.

You can either convert a video by dragging and dropping it into your browser, or make a recording straight from your webcam. Once that's done, the footage is sent to ClipGrab's editor, which features for cropping, clipping, flipping, rotating, and correcting brightness. This will be all you need for quick enhancements, but you want something more advanced, check out our guide to the best online video editors.

When you're ready to export your video, ClipChamp gives you a selection of conversion presets optimized for social media, Windows desktops and mobile devices. You can also convert videos to animated GIFs – perfect for social media.

Selecting Customize Settings provides a few extra options, including resolution, format (MP4, WebM or FLV) and quality (low, medium or high).

Apowersoft Free Online Video Converter processes files quickly, provides a great selection of formats, and looks great

3. Apowersoft Free Online Video Converter

A brilliant online video converter and editor, though you'll need to save the file uploader to your device before you can get started

Apowersoft Free Online Video Converter is a little unusual. Although it's a browser-based tool, you’ll be prompted to download and install a separate launcher app before uploading your files – much like Google Play Music's tool for uploading your tunes to the cloud.

It’s a very small application and you can have it installed in a few seconds, but it does rule out this converter if you don't have time, space, or permission for even a tiny program.

If that caveat isn't a problem, you'll discover a powerful online video converter with some great extra features. You can add your own watermark from an image file, trim the clip, apply various filters (including vintage and monochrome effects), crop it, and even adjust the volume.

The selection of output formats is excellent, and includes 12 audio formats if you want to strip the soundtrack from your video. Files are processed quickly, and once they’re converted and downloaded Apowersoft Free Online Video Converter lets you share them on social media with just a couple of clicks.

The selection of file formats available in Files-Conversion is extremely impressive

4. Files-Conversion

A clutter-free video converter that puts a great selection of formats at your fingertips. Not the fastest around, but it compensates with flexibility

If you just want to convert video files without editing them, and don't want the hassle or logins or separate installers, take a look at Files-Conversion.

This free online video converter from Dan’s Tools offers an excellent selection of conversion formats, including MP4, MOV, MPG, WMV and many more.  There are four quality options (most converters only provide three), and you can resize the video as well if you need to reduce file size.

Processing is quite slow, but if you need a very specific format for a particular application then this streamlined converter is a great choice.

123apps Video Converter offers a clean, straightforward interface that makes it easy to choose the right settings for your converted video

5. 123apps Video Converter

Not the speediest video converter, but the ability to choose your own video and audio codecs is a welcome touch, as are its preset device profiles

123apps Video Converter features a couple of large ads, but they're unobtrusive and don't interfere with the converter's main interface. There's no need to submit an email address or log in with a social media profile – just choose your file and start converting.

There are 10 popular formats to choose from once you've uploaded your file, as well as presets optimized for various playback devices. Clicking the 'Settings' button reveals drop-down lists of audio and video codecs, plus a handy slider that lets you adjust the video quality and gives an approximate output file size.

In our tests 123apps Video Converter gave the slowest performance, but the ability to choose your own codecs is an unusual and welcome touch. The device profiles are a nice touch as well, and something you'd more commonly find in desktop video conversion software.
