DaVinci Resolve

Let’s be frank. DaVinci Resolve isn’t a great name for an app, because it sounds like a hangover remedy. And the app it’s attached to isn’t the easiest to get to grips with, so you’ll need to invest a bit of time to unveil its charms.

But don’t let that put you off, because if you work with video it’s a really useful tool to have. The free version doesn’t support multi-core processing or 3D video, but it offers a lot of seriously powerful features for free.

Why you need it

Assuming your hardware can handle it (you’ll need a high performance PC with a recent Nvidia or AMD graphics card or it’ll run like those people who attempt marathons in ridiculously huge, hot and heavy costumes) DaVinci Resolve is a very powerful video editor with a focus on color correction and pro-level editing options.

In addition to primary and secondary color correction you can also edit videos, embed OpenFX plugins and mix audio tracks. You don’t get more advanced features such as noise reduction or motion blur effects, but how many powerful video editors do so much completely free?
