Warner Bros. must be feeling pretty confident in Suicide Squad. Even though we're months out from witnessing the supervillain ensemble in all their silver screen glory, early reports indicate that development has started on a sequel. The first mention was buried in an article from The Wrap about new film Bright, where a casual reference to director David Ayer's schedule confirms his involvement in Suicide Squad 2.

While that's hardly concrete proof, Variety's Justin Kroll adds that the studio is so excited by the early footage that a sequel is inevitable:

It's early days, definitely, but this is encouraging news for anyone who felt a bit hesitant about the direction of Suicide Squad. If the studio's willing to push on with a second installment for the antiheroic gang of enforcers, then their debut's got to be firing on all four cylinders, right?

The biggest hurdle is no doubt fitting in production around everyone's availability. As Kroll mentions, Ayer's plate is so full he won't be penning the script, and that's not taking into account the obligations of the cast.  We'll leave this one in the rumor category for now until Warner confirms the news. But still... it's exciting stuff.

Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman, Suicide Squad will open in the UK and US on August 5, 2016.
