I was doing my externship in Xray up in Tacoma, Wash (1972) and my then wife and I were traveling back up there on a Sunday.  We were on I5 going north behind a pickup truck.

I was about three car lengths behind him when the spare tire came loose under the bed of the truck and hit the hiway. It bounced  and went up in the air just missing the

roof and windshield of our car.  It then bounced into the left lane, just missing another car, went out into the grassy median and rolled thru the southbound lane and went over

an embankment.  Not one car hit it and there weren't any wrecks caused by it.  All the cars in my direction just kept going.  The pickup pulled over onto the shoulder.  I don't

know what happened after that, we were long gone.

Wow, that sounds scary :eek
I once saw 2 tires fly off from one truck at about 60 km/h when I was going to school.
There was no one else on the road than me and him, so no close calls that time.
