Arson and explosives squad detectives said the blaze started on a rural property in the town on the morning of January 17.

It burnt more than 75,000ha of land in Aberfeldy, Heyfield and Seaton.

Grahame Code, from Aberfeldy, has been charged with five offences including recklessly causing bushfire and causing a fire to be lit without written authority in a fire protected area.

He appeared before Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court in Morwell this afternoon and was remanded in custody.

He will next appear in court on February 5.
