Anonymous Hackers Children's Charity

Anonymous isn’t all about Guy Fawkes masks and news casts with creepy automated voices; sometimes it’s about helping others. As Network World’s Paul McNamara reports, some Anonymous hackers have gone to bat for the Red Sky Film & Television charity that’s aimed at eradicating hunger among New Zealand’s children. Apparently, a lone wolf hacker who was trying to impress Anonymous hacked into the Red Sky site and severely vandalized it, thus sparking a campaign on Facebook to find the perpetrator.

Anonymous hacker DomainerAnon found the hacker responsible on Twitter and asked him to please kindly return the data he stole so Red Sky could get up and running again. Within days of the exchange, Red Sky founder Bryan Bruce received an email giving him the name of the alleged vandal hacker, a 35-year-old Madrid man who lives with his mother. Bruce tells McNamara that he has reported the alleged vandal to Spanish authorities and is optimistic that justice will be served.

“The Madrid Police have already replied to my request and I am in the process of making a formal complaint through the Embassy here in New Zealand,” he said. “I have hopes that if supplied with compelling and accurate information they would act. Why wouldn’t they if it is handed to them on a plate? It’s not a good look for Spaniards to be bringing down a charity site that feeds poor kids in New Zealand is it?”

It certainly isn’t, and kudos to Anonymous for helping set things right.
