AntiThought Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 So I was looking at Karine's post about her issues with running Black Ops. But one thing about her PC has me baffled and I did not want to hijack her thread so here I am. Can anyone explain to me why the specs say it has a AM2+ socket but comes with a AMD Sempron 140 which uses an AM3 socket? PC specs: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=4162194&prodTypeId=12454&objectID=c02153185 CPU specs: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/sempron/Pages/AMD-sempron-processor-product-comparison.aspx How did they cram an AM3 CPU into a AM2+ socket? FiveMagic Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM2%2B "AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards due to the presence of both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controller AM2+ processors do not work on AM3 motherboards due to the processor's lack of a DDR3 memory controller" Quote
AntiThought Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 So you are telling me I could stick a AM3 CPU on my AM2+ mobo with no ill effects? What about the extra pin on the CPU? Quote
FiveMagic Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 According to wikipedia and google you can. I personally have no clue, so your guess is as good as mine. Quote
