ET BEGINNERS #2 Suggestion about people with high PING

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hello,
I believe that players with unstable ping should be redirected to a different server. I’m not talking about people from the edges of Europe (ping around 100), but from a completely different continent, like South America. I wouldn’t be writing this post if the issue didn’t happen repeatedly.

For example, there is a player with the nickname “Pirata.” Sometimes you can play with him, but most of the time his ping makes him impossible to track from my perspective. It’s hard to aim at a target that keeps teleporting in your field of view.

However, the absolute highlight is a player named “Lanzelot” (sorry if I misspelled the nickname) from Brazil. His ping jumps from 215 to 264; you can see that he knows how to play, but his connection and distance make him practically uncatchable for my crosshair. It’s nothing like a duel with “Anttiquus” (sorry if I misspelled that too) or someone of similar skill level, where you see their movements, their whole character, and you know exactly what happened.

i agree with you, high ping fluctuation is "unfair" because of the teleporting/lagging issue.

although we cannot simply kick or ban people because they have steady high ping. its not our fault its ET's fault that high ping players do have an advantage.

since you mentioned lanzelot, he does have high ping but most of times his ping is steady. about pirata i noticed yesterday that he lags and teleports around so i asked him to fix his connecting, if this continues he wont be able to play (atleast when im online 😄

Hi,

I logged into my old account (I didn’t remember the username or email), but I can’t see where I can delete it. Could you remove it? I prefer to use 1881 — I’m going to keep that nickname for longer.

Our teammate Lancelot is lagging as well. Ping spikes of 50 are a good example of that. Maybe when you were watching him, it didn’t happen. Today he even managed to kill me behind a wall I had already run behind — I ran two meters past it and his bullets still hit me behind it (which is absurd).

Send me message from both accounts please so I will merge them

this issue exists since game release, like i said people with high ping do have an advantage that we cant control it.

FA rule about ping fluctuations :

Quote

High ping is usually only an issue on servers with a large number of slots such as 50 or 64, it shouldn’t matter that much for a 20 or 24 slot server. Also note that a stable ping of less than 500 is allowed as it doesn’t hurt the server but if the ping fluctuates a lot from, say, 200 to 600 or 70 to 450, then try to work with them to fix it – put them in spec if you need to get their attention. If this doesn’t work kick them from the server. If after 3 kicks the player continues to lag, ban them for 12 hours for the same reason.

If a player is sitting at even 250 ping but it is stable. It won’t affect your gameplay.

only time high ping effects YOUR gameplay is if their ping is all over the place. (Not jumping around 20/50 variable, I’m talking going from 50 to 200 to 20 back to 400 etc etc.

What High Ping DOES

NOT

Affect

Your movement

Your weapon accuracy

Your hits on others

Your strafe jumping / trick jumps

Your experience is dominated by your own ping, not theirs.

while yes if you have 20 ping vs a 200 ping player there will be some small stutter. Here’s why

————————————————————————-

•High-ping players:

  • Receive updates less frequently
  • Client predicts (“guesses”) their movement
  • Corrections arrive late and snap them back

To you, this looks like:

  • Stutter-stepping
  • Micro-teleports
  • Unnatural strafing patterns

You aren’t missing — you’re aiming at fake positions.

————————————————————————-

•High-Ping Players Abuse the Timing (Often Unknowingly)

Because of rewinding:

  • High-ping players can:
    • Peek → shoot → retreat
    • Still get the kill while never appearing exposed to you

This causes the classic:

“How did he kill me without peeking??”

They did — just earlier in their timeline.

————————————————————————-

•Why It’s MUCH Worse in Public Servers

Public servers often mix:

  • 20 ms players
  • 300 ms players
  • Low sv_fps
  • No ping cap

Competitive servers:

Cap ping

Higher sv_fps

Predictable interactions

This is why ETPro felt “cleaner”

The advantage changes from mod to mod depends on how the mod handles server authoritative positioning for the weapon fire ray trace. In all instances minus low cpu power sv_fps 40 is much cleaner as @Shoresy stated and is soon to be the default in ETL hosted servers.

What's on your screen or theirs doesn't matter at all the server calculates hits based on where thinks you are in the timeline and using anti lag or prediction which all games use some just better than others. Depends on the mod ETL is far more advanced in this aspect.

this happens to me in game on Beg 2 a LOT!

i will take damage and retreat comfortably behind a wall or a door and the bullets seem to follow me through the wall even though I should be sheltered and I am killed!

I'm a high ping player, my ping tends to be between 200 and 260 but typically is quite stable

basically, it doesnt matter what kind of ping the players have, 100, 200 or 300. as long as they have a ping and internet connection are stable (smooth and clean lagometer), you will hit the player while aiming at the player's model. as you correctly noted, players like Lanzelot aka Kush with a terrible unstable ping spoil the whole game and something needs to be done about this problembut this is unlikely to be solved and the problem will remain 😂

I remember there used to be a safeguard on the servers during connection attempts. I’m just not sure whether it concerned a high ping value or its dynamic fluctuations. If a ping error was detected, you weren’t connected to the game, and of course an appropriate message was displayed.

ironically we do have a rule for this, we’re suppose to help them fix their ping or if all else fails help them off our server 😄 but this rule is more particular to what you mentioned. Very unstable pings that keep jumping n spiking like crazy
