I once read that most mammals have a natural ability to just swim, even human babies can swim under water but we lose it as we grow up and become more aware of holding breathe etc. You can torpedo human babies under water and they swim as they hold their breathe automatically. 

 

 

Also you may have seen but If you hold a puppy above water it will start moving its legs as if they are swimming before they even touch the water.
