My theory is that the lives were not for Syrio (faceless man) to take. He could have easily grabbed a sword from one of the fallen guards but didn't. Also, we aren't actually told that Syrio is dead except for Arya assuming he is. I feel like the faceless man has been shadowing Arya especially when we take into account that Syrio and Jaqen seem to say similar things Syrio - "There is only one God and his name is death" Jaqen - "There is only one God, a girl knows his name" possibly Jaqen assumed that Arya had been taken prisoner so he changed his face and travelled to Harrenhal where he knew that 'Arry was Arya (how is he the only one that noticed that?)
