Mac sleep issues

Wondering if any Mac users running OS 10.7 or 10.8 have had any issues regarding the default "preventsystemsleep" in terminal triggering to active without a deliberate prompt to do so?

Basically the computer will not enter sleep mode, while the monitor will go black the computer itself remains active. On installation the default is '0', however something happens to change that to '1' during use, though no single application seems to be at fault.

A simple fix like finding the command to set the system back would be the easiest approach but Apple, in their infinite wisdom, doesn't seem to know how to do that.

A google search shows this to be a recurring issue across the board and of course Apple, in their infinite wisdom, will correct the problem with their next OS but, I was hoping not to have to wait or spend another $150 to get there.
