Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, died today after undergoing a heart surgery a few days and having served 82 years, reported NBC.

 

Armstrong, who was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft that reached the moon on July 20, 1969, had maintained in recent years away from public events.

 

A family statement said Neil Armstrong died of complications from cardiovascular procedures. The statement did not indicate the site of his death.

 

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Radioed to Earth the historic news of the "giant leap for mankind."

 

Armstrong and teammate Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent about three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.
