Qlimax Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Hey guys, Well today a friend called me and asked if i was intrested in a old computer for free(HP Compaq PD1068p Pentium 4 desktop), http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/dsc01504t.jpg/ i came home and turned the power on,for some reasons there is a strange OS or smth active on it called: SOPHOS Safeguard Enterprise Device Encryption (SGN DE). http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/dsc01507hr.jpg/'>http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/dsc01507hr.jpg/ When i start up the computer i get the start-up screen from HP with the options: F9 for boot menu F10 Setup F12 Network service boot http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/708/dsc01505qs.jpg/ I just letting this screen pass and then SOPHOS shows up with the info: Thank you for taking the time to try SOPHOS Safeguard Enterprise Device Encryption (SGN DE) product. *** This trial is preconfigured Please ensure that this is installed on test equipment only *** The only 2 options that appear are : Accept or Shutdown. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/dsc01507hr.jpg/ When i press Accept a new screen appears with: Username: Password: Domain: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/190/dsc01508v.jpg/ Atm got some issues with it, I tried this several things like change the boot setup to CD-ROM, http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/30/dsc01509ga.jpg/ inserted a Windows 7 Professional disk, but when the computer restarts hisself and boot it from CD-ROM drive nothing happends, only a black screen with nothing on it, also changed the boot order manualy in the bios settings but still it doesnt help anything. Is it possible that a Pentium 4 doesnt work with Windows 7? Also anyone how do delete SOPHOS? since i even cant pass the Login screen.. Please gimme some feedback how to fix this issue.. Thanks! LA_Kings_Fan Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 WOW ... VERY OLD out dated tech ... why did you want it again ? The HP Compaq PD1068p comes w/ an Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.0 GHz, 0.5 GB of RAM, a 40 GB HDD, and Windows XP. First off ... decide if you REALLY want to keep it, seriously, it's VERY OLD, and replacement parts aren't cheap for out dated tech, and out dated tech is honestly too slow and limited to really run todays programs like WIN 7. As an example WIN7 requires at least 1 gig of RAM, that Pent4 is about the lowest Chip that can run WIN7, 16 GB of HDD space {almost HALF of the HDD in the PD1068p} and even then it would run slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Second off, IF you do keep it ... It sounds like this SOPHOS program is a WORK / JOB related software program, definitely proprietary, considering the HP PD1068p was considered a "Business Desktop" back in its day, this might be some sort of LAN networking program or something, thus the USER ID/PassWord requirements to gain access, maybe ask your friend who you got the computer from, maybe he can tell you the passwords/User ID's ? Third off, again IF keeping it ... I guess you could just replace the HDD ? a 40 GB HDD isn't going to cut it anyways, and a new 500 GB HDD is only like $40 ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148701 , OH WAIT take that back ... forgot OLD tech, you can't install a SATA HDD, you'll need ... an ATA IDE drive like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136199 @ $65 ... and then you'd either reinstall Windows XP on it, or WIN7 after you buy more RAM, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148089&cm_mmc=CNETFindMEMUS-_-20-148-089-_-na-_-na @ $80 and then maybe you'll have a working computer again ? Fourth off ... decide if you REALLY want to keep it, seriously, it's VERY OLD, why did you want it again ? 1 Quote
Qlimax Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 Easy and short answer to all of ur points: Playing like 2 years W:ET with laptop, Im kinda sick of it, Just want to play W:ET at full 24'' inch screen, and not getting stuck for my only option to use the laptop. i thought getting a free desktop pc was great, doesnt cost me any money, and finally not only laptop gaming, since W:ET doesnt need high performance stuff. So thats why i thought this was the easiest and cheapest solution.. But still thanks for ur advise Quote
LA_Kings_Fan Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 OK ... well I'm not that familiar with W:ET but it looks like that games system requirements are minimal and you COULD I guess use this OLD tech to run it ... If your friend knows nothing about that SOPHOS program, then as I mentioned I'd just buy a new HDD ... be careful what you get, most stores won't have this older tech sitting on the shelves today, you need an ATA IDE hard drive, see above link I posted last time. Personally I'd look what it has in the DIMM slots, but I'd guess stock which means 500 MB, I'd upgrade, I think the " page of specs " I pulled for your "new" desktop said it could go up to 4 GB of RAM, IF you're going to try and run WIN7 ... install the 4 GB. I don't think it had any Graphics card (used an integrated graphics CHIP on the MoBo) ... the best AGP card you can get would be something in this range http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814161337 a Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 AGP Video Card for about $100. But it only has a 185W Power Supply ... IF you're going to upgrade to a graphics card, you'll need to upgrade this as well, can't tell if it's a standard ATX PSU or not from what limited documentation exists on the system still ... you might have to pop it open and if YOU don't know ask, or post a picture here and others can help you, but you'll need something around a 400-500 watt PSU if you're going to run a video card, so another $100 +/- upgrade. AS you can see where I'm going with this ... to upgrade THIS computer fully to run on par with todays cheaper off the shelf bundles, you'll still be spending a bit of money, and in the end still have an older computer, it becomes cost prohibitive at a certain level ... and a system that's 10 years old, like I think this one is, has reached that point. LASTLY ... 24" screen ??? it came with one ? or you had one ? what about just plugging the Monitor into the VGA port off your Laptop ? How old is your Laptop ? Good luck with it either way Quote
