I only heard stories that showed how bad was serving for an average person(some people got occasionally shot by mistake) and stories that were funny, but only because I really cant picture myself doing the same stuff (Though, it must have changed by now compared to the Soviet controlled Hungary). Anyways, if I were to serve in the army, itd be either in peace or war time. If there is only peace, there is not much point in that (as there is no threat) or in war time, but I am not jingoist, and dont want to die or get a permanent injury. Reason being, police departments/academy don't like retraining bad habits. Just a word from a former Active duty Grunt. Good luck though bud! That reminds me of a local veteran who had been a firefighter in the Air Force. He failed the Fire Department exam because he had practiced with aluminum ladders like the ones used in the AF. The local FD used much heavier wooden ones. I did not hear if he later got in or not.
