Ping spike

BeeDee

Recommended Posts

Hey all i notice in Jay 1 my ping is usually in between 70-80 which it has been but about every minute or so it will jump up to 400+ and my game freezes. Any suggestions on a remedy for this?

thanks!

Is this on Jay1? Please provide screenshots of your lagometer (type /cg_lagometer 1 into your console), and include results from WinMTR for 100 and 500 packets. When pasting in your MTR results, please use the code function so that the formatting does get screwed up.

Read these for more info: https://fearless-assassins.com/forum-11/announcement-9-how-to-recognize-your-lag/ and https://fearless-assassins.com/tutorials/article/382-winmtr-checking-network-issues/

I will check on this later tonight. I think Jay1 and Jay2 are hosted in different locations (Illinois and New Jersey respectively), or at least in different datacenters- so lag that's happening on one server shouldn't affect the other.

Some MTR reports:

I tried to put this in a spoiler, but the forum wasn't having it. TL;DR on those- I see nothing wrong, other then the fact that I need to reboot my router. This is also a "peak" use time, so things are actually looking decent.
Anyways, I'll get on the servers later tonight to try to replicate this and we'll go from there.

i went on amazon last night and bought a USB ethernet adapter and an ethernet cord. I am going to see if maybe playing with the ethernet cord will help instead of playing over WiFi. Should be here tomorrow.  I have turned on my lagometer, but i am unsure on how to read it.

If you take a screenshot and post it here, I'll help you decipher it. :)

Switching to wired is a good starting point for eliminating lag and latency spikes. At the very least, you'll probably drop anywhere from 7-20ms in latency.

Regarding Jay2... I can't find any lag issues. I'll try again later, but yesterday and today I see no packet loss, and ping spikes are within margin of error.

Here's what I see on Jay2 (I circled the largest ping spike I had, and that was on my end):

@Captn So, if you post the MTR results and lago screenshots for Jay2, that would be super helpful.

I'm checking Jay3 atm for issues reported, and I'll check Jay1 shortly.

RE: Jay1, ping spikes are definitely present. There were 34 players active, probably 10+ in spec. I'm not sure what the threshold is for no. of players until it starts lagging, but there is lag.

i will do this later tonight or tomorrow. How many screen shots? gameplay seems to be stable until i get into a big gun fight. then the lag comes and i die.

5+ should be good. Having the fps counter on would also be helpful since you mentioned that it gets worse with large gun fights. The cvar and setting for that is /cg_drawFPS 1.

Seems like about 40 players in Jay 1 and then the lag kicks in. Just another reason to lower the slots on jay 1 and send more people to Jay 2

Screenshots as requested. Also the FPS is at 83 becuase i /seta_commaxfps 80 down from 125 to try to reduce lag. I dont think there was much difference.
