Can't update graphics drivers.

So I bought a cheap refurbished PC for like $75, works perfectly just for light usage and gaming. This PC should run things like ET and CS:GO pretty fine except there are a lot of FPS drops, in ET especially  and CS:GO crashes mid map load. I figured out that it is indeed my graphics drivers are out of date and could use an update. Some programs even tell me that it's over 800 days out of date so it's been a while

 

Now it's just a crappy integrated card from 2012 (ATI Radeon HD 4200) but it should still be able to play ET and CS:GO fine but it doesn't, hell I can't even set r_primitives 1 or change a lot of ET settings because it crashes with an OpenGL error likely caused by the very outdated driver.

 

The issue is that there is an update available for my driver but when I go to download it, it only lets me choose Windows 7 or Windows 8 as my OS yet i'm running Windows 10. I have no idea what to do. I've looked on Google but haven't found anything of use, hopefully someone here knows. Surely there must be a way to install Legacy drivers on a new OS? Thanks

AMD doesn't make drivers for Win10 for a card that old (it's from 2008, not 2012). Luckily, you can use older drivers without a problem. (Drivers for Vista on up should work fine)
 
Here's the latest driver for 64-bit and 32-bit machines.

Download and run DDU in Safe Mode first to remove your old driver, and then install the later version you downloaded.
You'll want your primitives value set to 2 (/r_primitives 2) for a smooth experience in ET.

To be honest, the OpenGL crashes are probably caused by a corrupted driver, rather than an outdated one (in the case of ET)- but driver re-installation should fix the problem.

Well this did work and I did end up successfully installing the drivers after a few attempts, but setting r_primitives 2 still crashes the game.

have you tried setting the command in the shortcut for the game?

Right click the shortcut, if you are using the exe directly then right click and send to desktop to make a shortcut. Click properties and go to target it should say something like:

 

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe"

 

 

You can put commands after the path like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe" +r_mode-1 +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +set com_hunkmegs 512 +set com_soundmegs 128 +set com_zonemegs 64 +vid_restart +r_primitives 2

 

Obviously change the settings as you want above. OpenGL for win10 is going to run a lot different, make sure you also go to the compatibility tab and change it to windows xp or 7, i think that helped when I used win8 and 10 but I usually use 7 for ET

So I was messing around and tried that and it didn't work, but i did eventually restarting my computer and then it kind of just worked after that.

So ET runs fine now after you rebooted your computer? If you didn't reboot after installing the drivers, that would explain the crash.

 

If it crashes again, a screenshot of the error would be great. A box similar to the one that appears should appear when the game crashes. You'll see some red lines stating something along the lines of "Failed to Initialize OpenGL subsystem".
