So ive been away from the game for absolutely ages. used to be part of -CW- with a few of the other guys on here. dunno if sh0ckl!mb is still here or not, i know stritan appears every now and again and obviously wh1rlw!nd(aka quaker)

but what is going on with the ET Community nowadays with the whole Dirty bomb insurgency and popularity would have brought people back to ID Software gaming, is there still scrims? any comp at all going on?

Been back on the HC server now for a few weeks and no sign of!Black! for a while Hoping he's still around. (And KingWillie, too!).

Raider comes in from time to time, my guess is he would be the man to ask re scrims etc.

Nice to have you back Buddy. :) :)

I've been out of the comp scene for ET for a while, since like 2008, so I wouldn't know who still scrims. I don't think NA has much activity anymore on ET Pro, not sure about EU.

I still talk to many from NA community, we mostly play pubg and rocket league now. Many of my teammates from Dirty Bomb went to Overwatch and enjoy the competition. I'd say if you are looking to do a competitive game, Overwatch would be your best bet. They made it on some pretty good teams being Cloud9, Selfless, Faze, Fnatic, and others. I didn't like the games ult meta so I didn't get into it but it seems to be pretty popular these days.

Hit me up on steam sometime

OH :o !  I get your title now!

You want us to provide you with a History Lesson of what has happened since you faded away.   :D

Maybe the big one (or were you 'here' for this) is that PunkBuster dropped service for ET.

The ID ET-master-server stopped for a while and an ET-Fan created a replacement.  ID restarted their Master months(?) later. I hope that that ET-Fan's software & site are available for future duty, if needed.

ET:Legacy has a replacement for et 2.06b out, and here is a pic of one of their developers:

BTW, all of the Trolls and Cheats have disappeared, for some mysterious reason.  Some blame or credit Ancient Aliens.  Some say it was people from the alt-Earth orbiting on the other side of the Sun from us.  Some credit a new Silent Mod Anti-Cheat/Blather module, code-named "Shit-shoveler".  [removed because of an untoward definition in Urban Dictionary :( ]

Is it just me who misses the dial up sounds though?

for those struggling to understand the point of this post. it is me asking what the ET community has been doing since i quit 14 years ago, hence i was looking for a history lesson.... hopefully you understand now dingus, name seems to fit quite well gj :D

hey raider yeah was good gaming with you in the Dirty bomb scene a while back haha. wow theyve gone on to the top teams? damn man you should cash in that skills you got going.

im pretty into rocket league myself so would be up for hitting that up with you too. with regards to overwatch ive got it and play it from time to time but it doesn't have the grab that ET did back in the day. dirty bomb is probably the closest to that kind of gameplay ive come across in a long time.

Thanks for all the welcomes from everyone and yeah the dialups im so glad that rubbish is gone.

and cheers to whirlwind for pointing me in the direction of this forum.

Shame about punkbuster. one note though is that i'm really really suprised that this isn't on steam. as a free to play game its better than most of them on there and would attract a lot of new players.

Agreed on the steam part but the creators don't support it any more so probably wouldn't want it listed anywhere.

Hello ET player, welcome back. For the history, I think you should read this article first (I hope the staff feels comfortable with posting links):

http://www.crossfire.nu/tutorials/221/how-to-play-et-in-2017

Of course, a lot has changed and the saddest fact is of course the activity that has dropped severly for such a great game. I heard many players debating on the reason why this happened, and there are a couple:

1. Lack of decent official anticheat/players recognition system. There's been a few projects, most of them you'll find in article I posted above, but I don't think you need to know all of them. There is still PB. Some players still think it's worthy, well it can detect some stuff if it's connected to a PB stream like PBBans. But since the support from EB is gone, and there are many cheats that were created after the last update it's become useless. The silEnT team has developed their own AC that work only on silEnT servers and it's very effective. Nitmod staff is also working on their NxAC. For the official gaming, ET league admins has tried very hard to find a good one. Right now we have http://eu.cybergamer.com/cgac/, also Cybergamer is now official ET ladder. It detected a few known players, although most people think it's not effective. As you maybe know, F|A are developing their own AC that work only on their servers.

But there still isn't an AC that will make sure that most people are clean playing scrims/officials, so many ETPro players have quit.

2. Uncomfortable situation for fresh players to keep playing. Many people think, that someone should create new version of graphic, combine ET with a modern engine etc. But I don't think graphics are the issue. Of course, ET need tons of upgrades, mainly those concerning security. There are patches, lua scripts, new builds, but none of them is official and is easily accessible. The most promising project is probably the https://www.etlegacy.com/. It's compatible with all versions, contains many fixes etc. But still, in my opinion, too little players can find it. I think that 90% players that play less than a few months are playing on (very old) 2.60/2.60b version with all default settings (terrible).

The other and worse fact is that most of ET scene is less or more experienced, and how would you feel if you join a server with pro players and play for the first time with them? Even if they played for 5 years there would be a huge difference. There are very few servers for beginners and many skilled players just choose them to get high rating, enjoy easy killing etc. Now imagine, you join good old 3on3.et irc channel and try to find an opponent of your skill... about 80% of teams/players announcing themselves on irc are med- or higher skilled.

3. People are just bored of the game. I fully disagree with this. When I first played and liked it I knew I'd play till I have a computer with internet connection. I'm sure most of the players will never get bored and still come back to this from time to time.

4. People grown up, started work, life, kids etc. Sure it's true. Many players started the game at age of 10-16 so now they are adults trying to get steady. Playing games sure disturbs that. The scene is just old and will never be as active as in the beginning. But I believe anyone can find at least half an hour for ET everyday/once a couple of days.

Hope I've made it clear for you. Feel free to ask if you have questions. Take care :)

Basically what happened since 2003 is it blew up. It blew WAY up and was immensely huge - mostly in Europe  with great competitions and great teams. There were hundreds of servers and more clans that you could imagine and then it got old and died off to what is left today. Put everything Katjo said in between
