Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day, when Ladies and especially Widows decorated the graves of soldiers who died in the US Civil War. The various separate events changed over the century until they were joined together to become Memorial Day, first held on May 30th each year. The Australian ANZAC-day is very poignant, especially because people get up in the middle of the night to gather for the ceremonies. It started out as a remembrance of the Australian and New Zealand dead from the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during WWI. Added : https://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/anzac-day/dawn-service Prior to the Dawn Service From 4.30am, excerpts from the letters and diaries of Australians who experienced war firsthand will be read aloud by a representative from each of the armed forces. Following these readings all will be quiet before the commencement of the Dawn Service. Dawn Service 5.30 am to 6 am The Australian War Memorial hosts the Dawn Service in close cooperation with the Returned and Services League of Australia ACT.
