First of all, I can't even recall, ok a couple of ones, who had it who so basically it's a matter of personal opinion. Also, I was expecting some music fans to post most likely their favourites instead of going to so called indisputable, so we can know better a kind of kind new guitar player or don't know the work so well. Assuming we all like good guitar riffs, comp. solos... This appears a bit only. It's a good top 50 different from the Rolling Stone's lists that am aware of. To say that Robert Fripp, Ron Asheton, Angus Young or Eddie Hazel, not to mention jazz players like Pass ou Pat, didn't make it is sort of nuts.

I'll kick off saying David Gilmour is off. It's a tough decision but those decisions are important in life. Would be much easier to put off one of the top 4 buttershredfingers.

I had all PF albums both in CD and Vinyl - original realese dates, and rarities and hear them countless times. This his how would rate them - top 5 - 1. Atom Heart Mother; 2. Umma Gumma; 3. Zabrieskie Point -cheating here-The Piper At The Gates Of Down; 4. Meddle; 5. The Dark Side Of The Moon. That said the guitars chords that made him famous wasn't till probably Dark Side. Although those fisrt experiments - to few- are equally if not more important. Also apart from Pompei/Umma and some bootlegs there's not much bag of early material live, which is one of the things I take hard into account. PF is a important band that took the best from Canterbury Scene and Psychedelic and emerge them in art rock popular and listenable to all kinds of audience. Ironically is when Waters, a really douche, use the the band as a vehichle for his phsycosis Gilmour just pops in with great compositions and solos that make him a guitar hero to any fan of the instrument (ok let alone Shine, Have a Cigar or Mother). This song, Mother, particularly exemplifies how Gilmour was just a puppet, anyone who listen the vers. from the movie feels the essence of that song. But when the band was really a band, or later as side man for artists like Bryan Ferry or Kate Bush, he was on the top of his game. He's one of the best pop/rock guitar players no doubt, but uttlerly high rated due to the long and mass success of PF, and I can accept he was clever enough using some new techonogies, I would be very unsure to choose bertween him or Peter Green. And if had to pick a desert island album from PF I would probably have Umma or Atom and surely not due to his guitar work. I'm a bit suspcious to talk since I grew up listen to PF, if you ask any kid today - when the vinyl seems to matter most and most in a world ruled by digital gadgets - would argue that bands like Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning, Planet X, Vanden Plas - you name it - wouldn't exist if was not for Gilmour. I had a different idea and feeling and that's the fun init.

I love David Gilmore and I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, I also have everything they ever released, including overseas releases (Japan, Britain, etc), B-Sides, etc, but there's nothing ground breaking in anything he does and that was going to be my 1st choice also. With that said....
