Cheep Tutorials : Incubating Chicken Eggs

Its not always easy to tell the sex of a chick. There are certain techniques but they differ depending on the breed of chicken. Some breeds are easy to determine their sex because a male will only have a specific set of colours. You can always wait until they grow up a little, the males will have larger combs (the stuff on their head) than females. A lot larger. Also males, are a lot more braver than females and will generally protect the females if any danger or threat arises, by putting themselves in front of them.

Again, with fertile eggs, you can either get them from a reliable source where they will most definitely be fertile or if you keep chickens, you will notice if the cockerel is mating with the hens. They will most likely be fertile. There is a technique for checking if an egg is fertile called Candling. You basically hold the egg up to a light source and observe whether the you can see through the egg or not. If you find that it is opaque and you are unable to see into it, it is more likely to fertile than not. Its not always guaranteed though. There is special equipment you can purchase to give a more certain answer but im not sure of the cost.
