Having a Dilemma! (Which PC?)

Shopping for a new Gaming PC. I would build one myself but I don't want my nooby hands to touch and break anything expensive.

So far I've come up with these two machines.

Any differences? 

960 or 970M? One is more recent, one is less powerful.

Which processor is better, is there any difference?

 

I've never had a gaming laptop so I don't know if they generate a lot of heat or what.

 

Help me out so I can get back to gaming guys!!

It all really depends on you.

 

First off ignore all the future misconceptions about laptop gaming that are about to hit this thread. Most naysayers are stuck pre-2000's when laptops were pretty shit. These days, with a little know-how, you can even upgrade CPU/GPU in your laptop- whereas in the past it was pretty much impossible.

 

MSI makes phenomenal gaming laptops. I currently (ownership reverted ftw.) have an MSI GT70 Dominator. The thing is a beast. I play GTA V @ 50-60fps easily. I still manage 40-50 when recording. it does get warm after a few hours of playing, but my laptop has an extra fan built in that I can turn on to handle extended gaming sessions.

 

 

Laptops do get warmer than PC's. Gaming laptops are made to mitigate this heat somewhat better than they used to. I looked over this model you chose and it looks like it has a generic cooling system. There's no extra fan switches or anything. If you plan on only playing basic games, you'll probably be okay. If you plan on buying some more intense newer games, you may need a cooling pad.

 

EDIT:  I was wrong. it has cooler boost 3 which is awesome. It's fairly similar to what I have. An extra fan setting to help keep things cooler.

 

Comparing the two two PC's, the desktop is obviously better.

3.4Ghz (pc) vs 2.7ghz(laptop) cpu. The higher the better for many new games on the market.

The 970m vs the 960. The 960 is slightly better. Not much though, which isn't too shabby when needing to make a choice.

 

The biggest thing I would look at is:

 

Do you do a lot of travel?

Do you need portability?

Do you like to game on the go?

 

If yes, go for the laptop. MSI make good gaming rigs.

 

If no, then just go for the desktop as it's slightly cheaper with a little more bang for your buck.

 

keep in mind that if you are looking at the travel side of it, that newer "Gaming" laptops are a tad heavy.

I won't be traveling, and I am looking for the best bang so I guess I'll go with the Asus.

 

Though having a smaller screen on the laptop will give me more DPI than a 21.5 inch. Cooling pads could work.

If you play only Et ..your profile says silent1..you may be overkill w a i7...i5 enough.saving enough to get both an inexpensive laptop if you need one to carry to do surfing net and work ..maybe school (if you do) on the go..and a gaming desktop gaming.. portability is a thought as SiD said.gaming laptops can be heavy to lug around...and the desktop would surely have a bigger monitor screen..if was me this is what I would do..but I have no plans to play anything but ET..and have a inexpensive laptop and tablet..the choices are basically to fit "needs". ..hope you find a fit for yourself..just my 2cents..oops..I need at least a 24" monitor to game..

I said the same when I was building my pc and turns out ET it's the only game i play.
