In title, I'm a Librarian at the Library of Congress. I develop small applications to support the Library's wide array of functions and have been involved in some of the digitization projects, especially the Internet Archive's handle linking with the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)

While I'm a generalist having been involved with many programming languages like lisp, tcl, c, PHP, VB6, Java (and all major SQL engines) and a bunch of others in a smaller capacity, I also bring experience with satellite command and control systems, Linux systems administration with the works (DNS/Apache/Tomcat/SQL server). All of this generalistic approach gives me the tools to perform really well in terms of IT Security as a CISSP holder and the ISSO for three major systems. So, I may not have the most brilliant answer in algorithm questions, but I can totally appreciate watching some coders geeking out!

Hi Guys

i was just wondering what would be the best for beginners? i have only started coding and got the basics of HTML & CSS but was wondering which is best to start with?

i was thinking of going into JS but am unsure, this is something i have always wanted to do but only have my spare time to learn it, so the easiest and quickest to learn is what i need.

any advise?

If your interest is web development then look at PHP. Go through some PHP tutorials online :)

PHP is a good start, but I would argue javascript is a better one these days.

Javascript is one of the hot topics currently. Having knowledge of React.js/Node.js etc is incredible useful :)

Would recommend going with typescript though and not pure javascript

It's true but if you end up a web development you ultimately have to learn JS variants along the way anyway :P That's what I love about being a web developer.. You have a core language that you improve by utilising the strengths of several others.. love it!

Like this whole forum is built on PHP using AJAX calls (JS/jQuery calling PHP functions)!

Javascript has become the 'core' language for many use cases.

Projects I work(ed) on rely mostly on React.js, Node.js, [insert name].js . PHP isn't used at all.  .Net is getting replaced by javascript solutions fast.

Sure they in the grand scheme of these projects many languages/stacks are used. All catered to the specific needs (ah, the beauty of micro services :) ). But the core of the 'web development' part is javascript.

Not that PHP is a dead language, far from. Just no longer the no brainer language to learn :)

Well .net was always hideous so that part I'm glad of! :P

Well, I always hated php more than .net

But when  I program it's Java/Scala :) But more of a 'data plumber' these days, not full time programmer anymore.

Late, but JS might be a good start. If you want to learn web technologies I would go with PHP or ASP.NET (PHP is better imo)
