US Government seeks to make streaming audio/video a felony offense

Looks like the old media lobby is at it again, this time with a new proposed law that would make streaming copyrighted works not only illegal, but a felony. It would also allow the FBI to wiretap your connection if they find your IP logged on a stream of a Lady Gaga music video that was uploaded without the record label's permission.

This is ridiculous. Making something as trivial as watching an episode of House via stream a felony is not only absurd, but it bogs down law enforcement with an ocean of stupid offenses to sift through when they could be focusing on more important things. For example, if this bill passes then the FBI gets to blow most of the internet crime division's resources on catching youtube visitors instead of catching guys uploading child porn, conducting hacking attacks on websites.

Then there's the fact that damn near everything on the internet violates copyright, especially under the DMCA.

*sigh*

Looks like the government sure has its priorities in the right place

All makes suddenly clear sense to me.

Those media lobbyists are pedophiles themselfes and this is how they want to stop the FBI from investigating.

America....land of the free? Not so much anymore. This kinda crap doesn't surprise me at all. Our freedom in America is starting to run on empty or at least the gas light is now on and there's no way we can fix it. It's this crap that has me hesitant on wanting to have a child and raise it in this limited freedom country we live in. Makes me want to live on some deserted island and be "off the grid". There's nothing worse than having some BS politician make decisions for us when he just thinks he's trying to make the world a better place. I gotta also say this, if we ever get a terrorist attack in our near future I hope they blow up their bombs in some government buildings ie: capitol building, white house, any and all courthouses. I think you get my drift. And don't think I'm against this country, I'm just tired of losing some of the freedoms in life.

So when your feeling down and think life sucks just remember its the government that makes our life suck.

Youtube already doesn't allow material to be uploaded unless you have the copyrighters permission so thats not true at all, everything on youtube is legal and anything illegal usually gets the sound etc. removed. And yes I agree it is pretty lame that they're proposing this but look at it from the otherside, how would you feel if you sunk alot of time, effort and money into making a tv show or movie or song etc. and then you didn't get anything back cause everyone streams it or dl's it illegally instead of buying your cd or streaming it from somewhere that you get something back for it.

That has gotta be one of the worst, and stupidest things I've heard in a long time. Hoping that someone gets blown up, especially the white house or capital building. If that ever happened the repercussions would be a lot more serious then your loss of streaming abilities. And courthouses? Really? As if its the judges fault for what politicians do and the laws that are passed, they just enforce the law they don't make it. As far as freedoms, technically your streaming is stealing so I don't see how your losing any freedom there. Get back to me where you live somewhere that actually does take away your freedom, such as your ability to use the internet in the first place.

Sorry to ruffle your feathers Blessed, I'm just seeing the overall big picture with this country. And I'm not hoping that someone gets blown up, in a sense I am kidding but at the same time being a realist. Where else would be a better place to attack? I know I'm already in a target area being 20 mins south of L.A. As far as the freedom, yes we have a lot of it and can do and go anywhere we want (traveling or surfing the net) but at the same time we are being watched, monitored, scanned, listened to, limited on what we can do overall.

Sorry to go off on a rant and slightly off topic, I'm just very anti-politicians, judges, lawyers, law enforcement officials. They're all on the same page in my book

Yes we're being watched and yeah its not perfect but its a hell of alot better then the majority of people have it, something to keep in mind ;) and to be "anti-politicians, judges, lawyers, law enforcement officials." I imagine you'd prefer if we went back to say the feudal system? Maybe you could be someones serf then, or perhaps communism where you not only are being watched and monitored but you'd also have the joy of having no choice in religion or who the leader of your country is, and you'd also have the joy of maybe disappearing one night never to be seen again. Its amazing how many people complain about their lives in the states and how bad everything is but yet your probably still better off then 70+% of the world. Your not seeing the overall big picture your seeing a very narrow, never satisfied view of the country you live in.

Would this include Netflix? I really don't know what I would do if I lost Netflix. I suppose I start renting videos again, but who wants to do that, its like a 10 minute drive to the video store and I just don't have the time.

Netflix is legal, whoever owns the rights to the movies gets paid the same as if you were renting a hard copy.

Feds have a lot of time on their hands. All of the alphabet soup agencies have fantastic coffers to do as they please. But also, Feds do not prosecute unless they have a slamdunk case and have some serious time to hand out.

Napster debacle redux.

To follow along with what Blessed stated, this is about protecting commerce and one of the entrepreneurs best benefit are the strict laws protecting their ideas and work. However given the global economy is influenced by countries with laws less severe than the US, I'm not sure how much global influence these laws will have. ie how will the US enforce streaming of content from other countries?

Well, it's good for the people who worked hard to produce the music/videos. On the other hand it's outrageous that the goverment is worrying about this right now, but I'm sure the artist had something to do with the law.

It's stealing bro. When you watch something you should pay for it's stealing. I don't agree or even think that people would be able to get in trouble for watching a youtube video when they didn't know it was copyrighted. -That would be youtube's fault for not disabling the video soon enough not yours. As for other sites where you watch tv episodes for free YOU know YOU'RE stealing. You like the show then buy the shit so they have $ to produce other shows. This is the same with stealing music. You like the band yet you continue to f***ing run them in the hole by illegally downloading their music. It's not completely pointless, think.............. You could be fined $3,000 for each song you've ever illegally downloaded. Don't think it's not there because you've deleted it, I think it takes it whiping out everything 28x for it not to be possibly obtained from your hard-drive.

Please be more cautious in your comments. Some of us are deeply offended by the suggestion of terrorism against the US government. You are also probably on a list somewhere for monitoring, as well as our entire forum now. Thanks buddy.

I agree that people shouldnt break the law but is it even possible for them to fight?! its like making a law against ants laying eggs..it might be illegal but it will never stop and no country in the world has the resources to waste on monitering such a massive network of possible felons.

...and you should stop complaining about your country, there are MANY millions of people who would glady take your place in it..including me. My country is attemting to make all newspapers governmaent controlled just like every other dictator in the world has. I heard the American national anthem the other day and it sent shivers down my spine, seriously bud you have a lot to be proud of.
