  1. Hey guys, I've been test driving a 64-bit release of Firefox for awhile now, I wanted to have a discussion about the stability of the 64-bit release vs the 32-bit one. For the most part, things have been smooth... I don't use that many extensions, but those I did in the past work flawlessly. Of course, Windows allocates more memory (probably around 1.5-2x as much) compared to the 32-bit version, but that's to be expected and I can't complain as I don't have a shortage of RAM. However, I do have complaints about the stability of the 64-bit version. I've been using Firefox for... sheesh, at least ten years and the only time I've had issues like this was back when version 3.x was released along with the horrible plugin-manager that ate up memory (due to a leak) like a beast. I signed up for the beta of 4.0 as soon as I could, and things have been good since then. Well, until now. Now I might have some unreasonable expectations, so here's a glimpse of my web-browsing: -Lately about 30 tabs open constantly -Close to 100 tabs constantly when I'm working on a project -A Firefox session usually lasts as long as my computer uptime, which can be between 7-14 days. -Average Youtube tabs: 5, Netflix tabs: 1, Pandora: 1. -I use Adblock Plus, with only a few sites whitelisted (like our forums). Now with this usage in the past, pages would still load snappy, videos would playback with no problem, and I could expect around 1.6-2gigs of RAM usage at the end of the week. Right now with 17 tabs open, Firefox is using 1.2gb of RAM which isn't a problem... but it's performing like it's hit a RAM ceiling. Videos buffering for awhile, pages not loading properly (usually a refresh will fix it), and sluggish general performance. Anyyyywayyys... TL;DR: IMO The 64-bit version of Firefox performs worse than the 32-bit version despite Windows allocating more resources. I'm curious whether any Firefox users here have noticed a difference in performance between the 32-bit and 64-bit releases. I know, I should probably just restart the browser more often... but it's sad IMO going from 14-days of stable uptime to restarting Firefox every day. Plus, more often than not I have information in forms that are partially filled-out, so I can't close the browser without losing that work. I'll probably be switching back to the default mainstream 32-bit release, but I am curious what others have to say before posting a bugzilla report.
  2. Firefox ended support for NPAPI with FF52. That means Java, Silverlight etc PLUGINS won´t work anymore. Only Flahs plugin is left alone, though I personally turned it off ages ago in favor of HTML5. Mozilla is developing WASM now to enable programs to be run within web browser sandbox. One cool demo is here, you can click on it and play around with it a bit: EPIC engine demo: https://s3.amazonaws.com/mozilla-games/ZenGarden/EpicZenGarden.html Some more info from Arstechnica: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/final-firefox-version-with-windows-xp-plugin-support-released-today/ I wonder how this demo runs on "potato rigs" as it takes 64% of my Fury X GPU recourses and 55% of I5 cpu? Extensions are still there and I got even my Estonian ID card working on 64x version.
  3. 1. Using pre-defined characters To filter the results type the character and the search term in the urlbar with a space between. The search will include the url, the title and the tags. For example typing "+ youtube" in your urlbar would bring up every tagged website that has the word "youtube" in its url, title or tag. The Characters are the follwing: * Limits the results to only those that are saved as bookmarks. ^ Restricts the outcome of the search to those in your browser history. In the standard settings this will be a 90 day period. This is useful if you have many old bookmarks saved that will be filtered out by this. % Will only show currently opened pages (not including those in the private browsing mode). In case you have many tabs or windows open this can increase your chance of finding the right one. + Filters the results to only show bookmarks with tags. ~ Restricts the results to websites that have been typed into the urlbar. This will filter out any website that was visited via link. Additionally you can use the following characters to only search the url or the title. These can be used separately or in combination with the ones mentioned above. Expanding on the previous example, "+ @ youtube" would search through your tagged websites and only listing those with "youtube" in the url. # Limits the results to those that title matches the search term. @ Only shows results which url matches the search term. 2. Customizing Caution: This involves the usage of the about:config page in Firefox. It can compromise the stability, security and speed of the application. To customize the characters type "about:config" in the urlbar, pressing enter and then confirm that you're going to be cautious. Now you should be able to search for the preference names. The main columns you have to be aware of is the aforementioned "Preference Name" and the "Value". These are the different preference names with their default settings (in the same order as in the first part of this tutorial): Preference Name Status Type Value browser.urlbar.restrict.bookmark default string * browser.urlbar.restrict.history default string ^ browser.urlbar.restrict.openpage default string % browser.urlbar.restrict.tag default string + browser.urlbar.restrict.typed default string ~ browser.urlbar.match.title default string # browser.urlbar.match.url default string @ To change the character of one of the filters just double click on the corresponding line. A dialog should pop up letting you change the default. You can use characters, letters or words as a trigger as shown in the picture below. With this change you'd need to type "tag youtube" to get the same results as described in the first example of this tutorial. To revert the setting back to the default just go to the preference in the about:config page, right click on it and select "Reset" in the drop-down menu.
  4. =F|A=SmartBrowser has been updated. Version 1.2 should install automatically next time you start firefox, but if it doesn't; go to Firefox > Addons > Right Click '=F|A=SmartBrowser' and click 'Find Updates'. Any problems, let me know. Basic rundown of the update is that it's syncronised with the new layout of the forum. Also, the icon has changed due to popular demand, and I've emboldened the Donate & Buy VIP links to try get more donations to support FA servers. Suitable for Firefox versions 3-8*. Download the addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fa-smartbrowser/ Please review / rate the addon! In future we wish to have it included in the FF Addon master library - to do so we need to have a keen interest shown from you! Thanks, Chuckun
