  1. The next video game in the Metro franchise releases next year, according to a website for Metro 2035, the final novel in Dmitry Glukhovsky's book series. The website features a timeline of when Metro's books and video games released, including the events of each one. "The next Metro video game" is pegged for 2017, and its description reads, "It all adds up to something. Where the books end their story, the game will pick it up. An era of great discoveries lies ahead." This makes it sound like the game would take place after the events of Metro 2035, which is set to release in English this holiday. The last game in the series, Metro: Last Light, released in 2013 Critic Kevin VanOrd concluded, "Last Light is notably superior to its predecessor, merging storytelling, shooting, and sneaking into a remarkable and cohesive whole. And through this harmony of game design comes the caustic dissonance of a world so torn asunder that a single possibility can bring with it endless hope." After Last Light, Deep Silver released a collection of the series' two games remastered for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC called Metro Redux. Developer 4A Games confirmed this past summer that it's working on two projects. One of those is an Oculus Touch game called Arktika 1, which bares a resemblance to the Metro series. It's a shooter set in a post-apocalyptic future during a new ice age, where players will have to use guns to take on raiders, marauders, and monsters. 3. In case you hadn't noticed the rivers of blood running down the street and rocketing blood sugar levels among pre-teens, it's Halloween! Almost, anyway, and close enough to the big day for Valve to kick off the 2016 Steam Halloween Sale. It's horror games as far as the eye can see (well, a few pages of them), plus scary movies, and some Halloween updates to non-horror games, too. A few highlights, chosen in typically arbitrary fashion by yours truly, include Limbo for $2, The Last Door Collector's Edition for $2, the Metro Redux bundle for $7.50, Darkest Dungeon for $15, and Outlast for $5. There's also FEAR, System Shock, Five Nights at Freddy's, Zombie Army Trilogy, Resident Evil, Dead Space, and lots more. The horror movie selection is surprisingly good too, with stuff like the Saw series, Ju-on: The Grudge, and American Werewolf in London all marked down. The Steam Halloween Sale is live now, but it's a short one: It's only running until 10 am PT on November 1. S http://www.pcgamer.com/the-2016-steam-halloween-sale-is-live/
  4. Earlier this week, EA released the first trailer for Battlefield 1's single-player. It was really cool, but it was also more of a sizzle reel. Now, we have a straight-up gameplay video to watch--and it looks good. The video from Westie starts off with a sobering comment to think about. "More than 60 million soldiers fought in 'The War to End All Wars.' It ended nothing. Yet it changed the world forever. What follows is frontline combat. You are not expected to survive," the text reads before the gameplay begins. This video shows off a section of the Storm of Steel mission. It looks incredibly intense, with a lot of close-quarter combat and even a tank-driving sequence. Also, when you die, a different name pops up presumably in an attempt to help players understand how many people died in the war. Storm of Steel is one of the missions featured in the EA/Origin Access Play First Trial, so if you're a subscriber, you can check this out (and the multiplayer) starting on October 13. Unlike past Battlefield games, Battlefield 1's campaign features multiple playable characters, spread across five different "War Stories." EA previously explained why it's going with multiple protagonists, stating that, "We felt that to have one character hopping through those different settings wouldn't be as immersive or totally respectful to the setting." 9. In keeping with the series' increasingly preposterous sci-fi leanings, the first mission in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has the player defending a futuristic Geneva against the Settlement Defense Front, before jetting off to space for a spot of jolly galactic dogfighting. Footage of said mission is in the video above, which was shown at the San Diego ComicCon earlier today. "When the Settlement Defense Front attacks UNSA forces in Geneva without warning during Fleet Week, Lt. Reyes and his squad have only one option: Fight back against the SetDef and give ‘em hell," reads the description. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare releases November 4. If you buy it in the correct manner, you'll even get a remastered version of Modern Warfare 2. 10. The third expansion for Star Wars Battlefront will release this September, and thanks to the Star Wars Celebration day in Orlando at the weekend, we now have footage of it. As you can see in the trailer embedded above, there's lots of war going on in stars, but as far as the raw facts are concerned, here they are: both Chewbacca and Bossk will be playable, there will be new maps both on ground and in space, as well as new weapons and star cards. Meanwhile, it was also announced that the fourth and final Battlefront DLC pack will be called Rogue One: Scarif, which points to there being (maybe) some connection with the forthcoming Star Wars film. No news as yet on when that will release, but Rogue Wars is due some time in September. Source http://www.pcgamer.com/star-wars-battlefront-death-star-expansion-gets-a-trailer/

  14. A TV series based on the Battlefield game franchise is in development, although many of the specifics remain up in the air. Paramount Television and Anonymous Content (True Detective, Mr. Robot, The Revenant) have obtained the rights to produce a show based from Electronic Arts and DICE, it was announced today. Neither of the companies has produced a show based on a video game before. There's no network attached as of yet, but the deal spans broadcast, cable, premium cable, and streaming services, so it offers a wide variety of options on that front. Michael Sugar will serve as executive producer. He'd previously served in that role on shows such as Stroumboulopoulos and The OA, while also producing Spotlight and The Fifth Estate. "Battlefield has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation," Sugar said. "Together with EA and Paramount TV, we’ll develop the Battlefield TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly 15 years." "Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming," Paramount TV president Amy Powell said. "EA's Battlefield has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base, which will allow us to bring this exciting and unique property to the small screen. We look forward to working with EA and Anonymous Content and thank Michael Sugar for his tenacity in bringing us this exciting project." EA's Patrick Soderlund also chimed in, adding, "Battlefield is one of the most loved properties among our players. We are thrilled that Anonymous Content and Paramount TV will look to introduce fans to Battlefield through a new medium." There's no word yet on whether the show will be based on any particular game in the series, or indeed if it will have anything in common with them beyond the name. (Story has never been their strong suit.) The next game, Battlefield 1, is due out in October. Back in 2012, Fox attempted to adapt Battlefield to the small screen. The project was set to be an hour-long action-comedy based on Battlefield: Bad Company, but it unsurprisingly did not come to fruition. 15. EA continues to give away free games through its On the House program, with the latest being made available today. Action RPG Nox is the latest title to be offered for free. Originally released for PC back in 2000, it was developed by Command & Conquer creator Westwood Studios. It features both a single-player campaign (where you play as either a warrior, wizard, or conjurer) and an online multiplayer mode. However, being such an old game, the official online servers are no longer available. That means your only option for multiplayer is resorting to a LAN setup or looking online for solutions that fans have come up with. You can grab Nox for free now through Origin. While it does require you to use EA's Steam-esque service to get the game, adding it to your library permanently makes it yours--you don't need to stay subscribed to anything, as is the case with Games With Gold or PlayStation Plus. Additionally, On the House is offering one of Battlefield Hardline's expansions, Getaway, for free. (It's free on consoles, too.) You don't need to own the game in order to claim it, so you can grab it for use with the Origin Access version of Hardline or in case you end up with a copy in the future. 16. Following some early leaks which suggested that the new entry of the Battlefield series was going feature a World War I setting, EA and DICE have finally announced Battlefield 1, which will be released later this year on consoles and PC. The general public hasn’t seen much of the game in action, but some Battlefield 1 gameplay has been shown behind closed doors, and new details on the game have managed to surface online. Plenty of videos detailing the behind the scenes shown Battlefield 1 gameplay have surfaced online a few hours after the game has been revealed. According to these videos, Battlefield 1 will feature a huge old Battlefield styled map, plenty of Air combat, a new melee system and more. Details on the single player campaign have also surfaced online, with a more open feel that will make it feel different from the Battlefield 3 and 4 campaign Medic has syringe revives One of the maps mentioned looks HUGE–old BF style Gameplay trailer looked similar; reveal trailer really didn’t seem “facetious” in comparison Air combat: dogfights, strafing runs, bombing runs–DICE wants there to be a lot of air options; you can sit in friend’s gunner seat while they do strafing/bombing runs or dogfight You can control battleships; can demolish shoreline (ground deformation was mentioned in another description) Horses will be best for scouting/flanking (like bikes) Supposed to have a new melee system Bayonet charge ability Can likely use sabers Support seem like they’ll have heavy machineguns Seems like four classes will have weapons similar to what we’d expect SP: more “open” campaign, make it feel like a “Battlefield” campaign as opposed to BF3/4 (he said it sounded more like Bad Company’s campaign) Trying to make use of battlegrounds a lot of people don’t know about Progression system wasn’t confirmed; neither was weapon customization Didn’t find out if you can pilot the zeppelin/barrage, but it’s not just a part of the skybox; planes flying around it Seems very close to completion Mentions again that there is some kind of dedicated driver class for vehicles, related to how you spawn into them. Still not sure D-Day style map (obviously not D-Day) There are double-propeller planes, much larger planes than were shown Clip of horses riding alongside a train–can you board from your horse? Gas mask does reduce peripheral and also really changes the soundscape, too Big emphasis on close quarters engagements and melee Can get entire squad into tanks–sounds like tanks may be team-oriented vehicles Really cool maps; one had train that ran through forest Source http://wccftech.com/battlefield-1-details-scenes-gameplay-showing-air-combat-huge-map-revealed/
  17. odemasters has announced F1 2016, which will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this summer. Among the big new features are a career mode which will "take drivers deeper into the worlds most glamorous, exciting and prestigious motorsport, both on and off the track." "The life-like recreation of the sport will be further enhanced by the addition of the sports iconic Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car, as well as the introduction of the challenging new street Baku, Azerbaijan," the studio said in a press release. The career mode will allow players to "create their own legend" over a career that can span up to ten seasons. It will also feature a "rich car upgrade system" that is integrated into the new practice development programme." "The career mode, together with the re-introduction of the Safety Car, the first inclusion of the Virtual Safety Car, and a number of other unannounced improvements means that F1 2016 will have more new features than any other year of the franchise," said principal game designer Lee Mather. Hospitality areas will serve as the game hub for the player, and will be where research and development is conducted, and the player can work with their Player Agent to develop on track and off track progress. The first gameplay of F1 2016 will be revealed at E3 2016. The last entry in the series, F1 2015, earned a 6/10 in GameSpot's review. "F1 2015 is an incredibly frustrating game, representing both a wonderful step forward and a massive stumble," said Danny O'Dwyer. "Serious technical issues, a dearth of game modes, and multiplayer which is functionally broken on the PC sour what is otherwise a wonderful driving game. "If you can get F1 2015 to run without crashing on your PC, and you're satisfied playing Championship Mode, this is a marvelously fun driving game. But just like in Formula One racing, no matter how good your car feels around the track, it counts for nothing if you can't get it past the chequered flag. Reliability is key in racing, and right now F1 2015 on PC has too little of it." Source http://www.gamespot.com/articles/f1-2016-announced-for-ps4-xbox-one-pc/1100-6440271/
  18. A pair of games are having free weekend events on Steam this weekend, allowing you to play them as much as you want for the next few days. Starting now, both Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide and RPG Maker MV are free to play until Sunday, May 29, at 10 AM PT. You can grab them by hitting the Play Game link on their respective Steam store pages: Warhammer / RPG Maker MV. Vermintide is essentially a Left 4 Dead game set within the Warhammer universe. It's a first-person action game that can be played cooperatively with up to three other players (or AI-controlled companions). There are five different classes to choose from, each with their own weapons (including swords, hammer, bows, and guns), and a loot system to outfit your character with new gear. If you decide you want to keep playing past Sunday, you can pick up Vermintide on sale for $18 (down from $30). The Collector's Edition, which includes a soundtrack some exclusive in-game items, a behind-the-scenes pack, and more, is also discounted to $27 (down from $45) RPG Maker, as the name suggests, is less a game and more a game-maker. With it, you can build your own RPG, even without any experience doing so. If you enjoy doing so, you can permanently add RPG Maker MV to your library at the discounted price of $40 (down from $80) Source http://www.gamespot.com/articles/play-these-games-for-free-on-steam-this-weekend/1100-6440221/
  19. No Man's Sky, aka The Game I Desperately Hope Is Not Delayed, has reportedly been delayed. Kotaku is reporting that retailer Gamestop has been instructed to amend the release date on promotional posters with "coming soon". Another unnamed "reliable" source has also confirmed the delay. One of these sources claims that the space adventure is likely to release in July or August. It's true that marketing for the game has been a bit quiet of late, but with E3 around the corner, that didn't seem too ominous until now. It's disappointing if true, but these delays are usually in service to the quality of the game, and besides: there is no lack of other games to play right now. (You could play this lo-fi take on the space exploration theme). Still, the delay hasn't been officially confirmed by Hello Games or Sony, so don't go cancelling your June holidays just yet. In the meantime, here's what Chris Livingston thought after spending a bit of time with the game. Source http://www.pcgamer.com/no-mans-sky-reportedly-delayed/

  21. Capcom has released a new trailer for Umbrella Corps, its upcoming third-person shooter set in the Resident Evil universe. The video, which you can below, shows a Raccoon City that has descended into chaos, with teams of agents battling over biological samples as infected zombies indiscriminately attack both sides. The video also showcases some of the different gameplay modes that will be available in the game. Among these is Multi-Mission, a 3-on-3 mode that provides multiple "unique ways to play." We're also given a look at some of the locations the action takes place over, such as Resident Evil 2's Raccoon City, Kijuju from Resident Evil 5, and the Spanish village from Resident Evil 4. "The Raccoon City map features wide open city streets contrasted against a claustrophobic maze-like sewer system underneath," Capcom explains in a press release. "Players can take cover behind vehicles above ground, while cutting a path through the underground could prove to be advantageous. "The Police Station map is scattered with makeshift barricades throughout the halls but the overall lack of hiding places will maximize the frequent close quarter encounters. Using available cover effectively and utilizing the Tactical Shield for added protection will be the key to survival here." Also shown in the trailer is the Upgrade Pack, which features "iconic" Resident Evil character skins, weapons patches, custom colours, and emotes. The Upgrade Pack is available as an add-on for €14.99/£11.99/ $14.99. The Deluxe Edition includes both the game and the Upgrade Pack contents together at a discounted cost of €39.99/£32.99/$39.99. "Players can join the fray with masks for Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker, Leon S. Kennedy, Barry Burton, and Jake Muller as well as a HUNK set with a helmet, mask and outfit." Umbrella Corp launches on June 21 for PC and PlayStation 4. The game was originally scheduled to come out in May, but was delayed to give developers extra time to "optimize" for launch. Capcom has said the launch of Umbrella Corps represents "warm up" for what Capcom has in store for the full year. Reports have indicated Resident Evil 7 is in development. If so, it may be announced during E3 in June, though this has not been confirmed. Source http://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-umbrella-corps-trailer-shows-iconic-resident-e/1100-6440112/
  22. With Total War: Warhammer's release now less than a day away, Sega has published a new trailer for the PC turn-based game. Titled "Conquer This World," the video offers an overview of the game's four races: Empire, Dwarfs, Vampire Counts, and Orcs. Warhammer is the first game in the series that combines the classic mechanics of the historical-based Total War series with the fantasy universe of Warhammer. Sega says this will deliver the "most colossal and addictive fantasy strategy game of a generation." Although Warhammer doesn't launch until May 24, reviews for the game started showing up last week. GameSpot's review scored the PC game a 9/10. "When you're in the middle of a siege and you're coordinating an assault with a friend, Total War: Warhammer approaches perfection," reviewer Daniel Starkey said. "You'll be tested on all fronts and asked to manage complex battles with broad, nuanced outcomes. Every system and piece feeds into others, and your choices make all the difference. It's a triumph of real-time strategy design, and the best the Total War series has ever been." Warhammer was developed by Creative Assembly. The developer has big plans to support the game not only with DLC, but also two sequels. Source http://www.gamespot.com/articles/epic-new-total-war-warhammer-trailer-invites-you-t/1100-6440061/

  24. Modern Warfare Remastered, the new version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, will include 10 multiplayer maps from the 2007 original. Three of these--Crash, Backlot, and Crossfire--were announced earlier this week. Now, two more have been revealed as part of a new Forbes story. The two new ones are Bog and Overgrown, according to the report. Activision says all of Modern Warfare Remastered's 10 maps are "fan-favorites," and indeed, the five announced so far fit that description. Activision will announce the remaining five maps in the time ahead. In other news about Modern Warfare Remastered, a newly released graphics comparison video shows off how much the visuals have improved. Also in the interview, Call of Duty executive Robert Kostich said he is not concerned about the possibility that people may play Modern Warfare Remastered more then Infinite Warfare. "We're thrilled they're going to be playing a lot of Call of Dutythis year," he said. Infinity Ward studio head Dave Stohl said the two games each have their own unique appeal. "If you think about it, basically they scratch two different itches," Stohl said. "You're gonna scratch the kind of more nostalgia Modern Warfare itch with the remaster, but all the kinda cool new stuff in Infinite Warfare is really exciting too. Obviously the Infinite Warfare experience is big with all the new bells and whistles, but it'll be fun to go back to Modern Warfare multiplayer as well." Infinite Warfare launches on November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The only way to get Modern Warfare Remastered is to buy one of the premium versions of Infinite Warfare, which start at $80 and run up to $120.
