Minecraft Lag in Minecraft (And how to fix)

Hey, here's another one of those guide things xP

So, with games, comes lag. No matter what, at some point, you're going to experience some type of lag.. But it's important to know what kind of lag you're having.

In minecraft, like most games, there are two primary types of lag. Server-side lag, and client-side lag. The following is how to tell which you're having problems with.

--Client Side Lag--

There are two types of client side lag.. FPS lag, and client latency lag.

-   FPS (Frames Per Second) lag, is when Minecraft starts to run jumpy. It's not smooth when you look around at all the pretty blocks. This is typically because your computer is having a little (or a lot) of trouble running the game. Contrary to most beliefs, Minecraft is a pretty PC intensive game. Because of this, people have found ways to cut down on this lag, to make your experience more enjoyable. The Optifine Mod, found here, re-codes Minecraft to run better, with less FPS lag. It also adds a whole-lot more video settings, so you can make everything perfect for your needs. Here's a video tutorial on how to install Optifine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2s5d7w89i4

-   Latency lag (Client-Side) You know when you're building your house, and you place a block, and either it takes a while to hear the sound of placing? Or you hit a zombie, and it doesn't register for three seconds until you've lost half your health? That's Latency. This is do to a weak signal between your computer and the server. The way to find out you're having latency client-side, is ask fellow players on the server if they're lagging too. If they're not, then it's you that is having issues connecting.

--Server Side Lag--

Server side lag is mainly just connectivity issues. It's latency lag, just caused by the server. Here are some ways to check if the server is lagging..

  • Ask fellow players if they're experiencing lag too. If multiple people are having latency, the server is probably lagging
  • If available, do the command /gc  and look at the "TPS" If it is anywhere in the 17s or lower, the server is lagging a bit. The colors of the TPS text will also change, telling you if it is lagging. Green means server is good, yellow means slight lag, red means awful lag

If the server lags for an extended period of time, tell an admin! Or post on the forums, so they can do their duty and get the server back in tip-top shape for you. Even if they're already working on it, it's never bad to make sure!
