This year's Bastille Day parade was dedicated to France's overseas departments, territories which are for all intents and purposes, extensions of France.

One of the most interesting uniforms was worn by the Pionniers from Aubagne's 1st Foreign Regiment, Legion etrangere, who marched the Champs-Elysees in their khaki uniforms and tan leather aprons.

Soldiers from the Castelnaudary 4th Foreign Regiment, another Legion etrangere, wore their red and green epaulets on their shoulders as they march down the Champs-Elysees in their white kepi hats and blue sashes around their waists.

Athletes in form-fitting sports uniforms in the patriotic red, white and blue colors, and ultra short shorts shook hands with France's President Nicolas Sarkozy, as top brass looked on smilingly.

Above, the French ''Patrouille de France'' alphajets did a tri-color red, white and blue aerobatics display, tearing through the sound barrier… Bastille Day, the French National Day celebrates its revolution marked by the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 through various parades and official ceremonies throughout France, celebrated on 14 July annually.
