After the soviets withdrew in 1989 Iraq invaded nearby Kuwait and Osama offered his Mujahadeen fighters to defend the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The king refused, choosing American military support over Osama's small army. This angered the radical as he and his followers believed that the foreign involvement in the middle east was a stain and an unwanted presence in what he believed to be a problem that must be resolved without the involvement of the 'infidels'.
